Finally figured out the problem with the soundcard:

Correct vendor ID, correct card ID, wrong subsys ID. PCI-bus ID does not match any of the drivers that we've found. Changing the .inf file makes it install but then it go 'splodey. I think I need to go and shout at tech support.

Hopefully they'll be able to do something, like provide me with an older driver or a firmware upgrade for the card. I do not wish to buy another soundcard. This one shiiiiiiiiny.

But at least I learnt something new.

Have you tried googling for the entire string from the inf, and have you tried driverguide?
