Soundcard bricked. Call tech support and explained the whole story. Done the fastest troubleshoot ever ('Have you...?' 'Yup. And I tried x, y, z and pi too. No joy.' 'Well, that shuts me up. Wait, how did you know to do z?' 'Geek with geek friends.' 'Ah.'). Explained the difference in the subsys numbers and was told that made no sense and shouldn't make a difference. Considering we've done all things possible and then some and the computer starts going 'splodey when the drivers are forced on by fiddling with the .inf file, he's 90% certain the card's a goner.

It's 6 or 7 years old. Guy's going to see if there's a possibility of making me an offer on the new USB version of the Firepanel, which would be nifty as I like Terratec. May decide not to as I've not done any recording in a long while and I'm not sure I'm going to...

Bit by bit it's all breaking down and getting replaced. Soon, there will only be the case left.

Okay, I'm curious. Were you recording from instruments, and if so, what do you play?

Not recording from instruments, no. When it was all set up when I was living at mum's, I could plug a record player and tape player in and do sound capture and then play around with it, improving quality and such before burning it to CD.

Dad, on the other hand, used it to record from the keyboard and made several CDs for the choir he sang with. It also pretty much ran the entire sound system in the office.
