After the Rover75 went 'splodey earlier this week, a new car was acquired. It is another Rover and it is an automatic. I...don't deal well with automatics. There's is a lack of physical connection to the car I'm driving. I've always driven stick and prefer it. However, this one isn't bad.

It's well-balanced, sticks to the road and does not corner like a whale like the previous Rover (sorry, [livejournal.com profile] da_pol, it did really do that :)).

And I only face-planted* onto the steering wheel once. I'd say that's a win.

* Yes, I did. Don't laugh.

No no no, whales corner quite nimbly. It cornered like a barge :-)

That's because it *was* a barge. Hmm, actually, I wonder if it could be converted...

Reading your and Random's journal in concert:

My technque is to put my left ankle on the floor under my right thigh, thereby being NOWHERE NEAR the pedals. You learn progression in your right leg, which is what the accelerator and brakes need, and sharp solid application with your left leg, which is what the clutch needs but has NO PLACE while driving an auto.

Works for me, anyway

*grin* Only times I've ever driven autos have been when I'm driving on the wrong side of the road. The reasoning is that when I'm having to get used to a new car (which takes me a while) and a new handedness, it helps if I'm not having to figure out an unfamiliar clutch. Also, not constantly trying to change gear in the door.
I seem to have an easy time getting used to autos, because on these occasions I am *really* *concentrating* for the first few miles ;-)

Never tried one in .uk....

Been mostly driving automatics for the last few years (though I still prefer stick shifts - if only for the uphill climb to Jerusalem). I started out by folding the left leg and willing it not to move, which made for a very numb leg at the end of the drive. Once I got used to it though - I just let it move around and not use it for driving. Actually going back to a clutch car made it hurt *g*

I want my Peugeot 106 back. I miss it. (and it was a stick shift, of course)
