My ankle's healing nicely, but still really quite painful. On the upside: my back hasn't been sore in ages, and my hip's behaving. This is quite possibly because of the gaping hole that is in my bloody leg which is actually incredibly unpleasant and I'd really like it to stop, please...

My theory is that your ankle has given your back and hip a few days off, because it has the pain thing covered. Like a little vacation for your pain.
