It's freezing. The parking lot outside my house is like milky glass and slippery as hell. The sidewalks aren't any better so I've been taking my car into work, because while walking in the cold is nice and refreshing, I like my limbs in roughly the same shape, size and position at the end of the day.

And it just started snowing again. This is going to be so much fun.

Hence the addition of the wheeled metal box. It might be all crumple zone compared to newer wheeled metal boxes, but it will at least not have a wheel slip out from under it and go arse over teakettle. :)

I've just been walking in the road - the roads around here have been gritted and the pavements haven't.

Generally when other people see me walking in the road, they think "that's a good idea", and soon enough I have a trail of people in the road behind me...

You do know that "steer around the road-using pedestrian in the slush and ice" isn't a particularly precise sport?

(a) The roads are (occasionally) gritted and (some of the time) relatively non-slippy

(b) The pavements are not, and are ice-rinks

(c) Without knowing any relevant statistics, I suspect that the road is the safer place to be. At least if you want to get anywhere on foot rather than shuffling along the edge of the pavement in tiny steps while hanging tightly onto peoples' garden fences.

Valid points all, though with road conditions similar to those we experienced round here recently (very cold, icy precipitation freezing to dry roads and being compacted by traffic before salt can be applied), I possibly have less faith in my fellow car drivers' abilities to accurately control their direction than you do :-)
