Halp (computer games)

Sooooo. There's this console in my house. It is, I think, a PS3. I would like to play games on it.

I am: pants at console games; pants at strategy.

I have: a short temper; no patience for 'time it perfectly or die'; have a tendency to buttonmash

I want: a good story; good writing.

I do not have: any clue which PS2 games I'd like to play are backwards compatible; any clue how to find out; a lot of money.

I hate: racing games.

I need: suggestions.

JRPGs, I'd say. Try the Final Fantasy series, maybe. XII is about the best of the ones available for PS2, which *ought* to be forwards-compatible.

Agreed, final fantasy can be quite absorbing and only requires minimal input from the strategy / fighty bits of your brain. The lego starwars / batman / indiana jones ones are super-fun (though there's a certain frustration element to them) whether you're a collect-all-the-things player or a button-mash-lets-fight-get-through-this type (no guesses as to which I am *mashes keyboard* :D

For fun, unpretentious games, I'm very fond of the Lego [Film franchise] games, in particular Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Don't know about compatibility, though. I think it's more dependent on the console than the game, in the case of PS3. Have a look here (http://www.tech-faq.com/can-you-play-ps2-games-on-ps3.html) for a rundown of what PS3 consoles come with backwards compatibility.

(With a limited budget, I'd actually recommend getting a second-hand PS2. You can usually get a bundle from ebay, or your local GameStation or independent game (not Game, who don't tend to do used hardware) store, with console, one or two controllers, and a game or two for about the cost of a new PS3 game.)

I've never played the lego games, but they are delightful to watch. I'd play them if I had more time.

(All my favourite console games are either unavailable on the PS3, expensive, or both.)

I was also going to suggest the lego games!
I don't know whether you'd consider them good writing, but they are silly and fun.

Heavy Rain (mentioned above) is an interesting thought - more interactive movie than game. The writing and production are good, but might not be great if you're in the mood for rapidly killing stuff :-)

How are you with RPG-like stuff? Fallout 3? Excellent writing, timesink. (no idea if it's available for PS3)

ah, just saw what Trialia said. Personally I find the japanese RPGs to be boring, repetitive, grindy and dull. But YMMV :-)

I like JRPGs, but yeah, the grind can suck. It's rare that I'll get more than half way through one before giving up - often around the 60 hour mark, which I think is perfectly acceptable playtime for the price.

Hmm, "button mash". There's a few games where button mashing will actually do the job.
Ones that come to mind are Heavenly Sword and Bayonetta. They both have a reasonable story.

For non-strategy, I'd recommend the Katamari games....there's a severe lack of story however.

How are you at puzzle games? How about Monkey Island or Sam&Max?

Beyond Good and Evil is now available on PS3 - on download - its the bestest game ever :)

+1. Beyond Good and Evil is incredibly good. It's the only game I've bought for both PC and PS2. Also, I love the music that Cristophe Héral made for it.
