For I have my first flower! Look: "one whole nasturtium flower.

Rejoice some more, for I have caterpillars! Caterpillars on the rose. Apologies for the quality, as Mister iPhone does not allow change of focus.

EDITED TO ADD LINKS: Because I fail at HTML, yay!

Caterpillars are no cause for rejoicing. Nasty wriggly little everything-eaters.

I disagree, in part... some caterpillars are wonderful things. Three of the most beautiful butterflies seen in this country come from caterpillars that eat mainly thistles or nettles. (5 if you could sub-species. http://www.nettles.org.uk/nettles/wildlife/butterflies.asp shows the most common.)

But the ones in Sessifet's picture look like Cabbage White jobbies, so yes there will be no rejoicing here over them.

[1] As far as my eyes can identify anyway, given the frankly *shoddy* framing. ;)

My next step is removing some of the seeding nettles from outside of the fence (in a wet shadowy area) and dropping them in the designated wild area of the garden (where there are already some nettles). That area has some grasses and also a happy bramble. I hope that's a good start to help the beautiful ones.

Still, I have to start small and easy first. I only have a few butterflies (a few cabbage whites and one or two brown jobbies). There's only a small number of bees and bumblebees as well. This garden is depressingly dead. So if I can make it a good place for the 'easy' insects to live and breed, I'll be happy.
