So today, I went to get my copper coil replaced.

This was not going to be straightforward, considering my luck in the past and the fact that my IUD wires were snipped so short that I haven't ever been able to feel them. Due to the high chance of rooting having to take place to locate the little blighter, the doctor opted for anaesthetic jelly. She was really pleasant and professional and refused to talk down to me, which is a rare trait in a doctor here. Due to some complications with another patient, though, another doctor came into attempt the removal and replacement. I say 'attempt', because she was mildly concerned about there not being any wires to grab a hold of. The concern mounted when I used the words 'retroverted' and 'retroflexed' in combination with 'uterus'. The GP who was there to look over her shoulder (he was in training) seemed very intrigued. She was less so (I'm assuming because she was the one to do the digging).

Enter the crochet hook (and it really does look like one). It's supposed to hook around the wires and facilitates removal. Problem: no wires.
Enter the teeny tiny forceps. It's supposed to grab the end of the IUD so you can remove it. Problem: they actually couldn't find the IUD*.

After about 10 minutes they admitted defeat. If they hadn't, I would have because my body was tensing up and that never helps. So now I have to wait for an appointment with Complicated Contraception because they need to do an ultrasound in order to find my coil so it can be replaced. Joy.

*This led to questions such as: "When is the last time you were sure it's still in there?" Erm...dude, I think I'd have noticed if it had upped and left. This is not like an implant. It's still in there, possibly hiding behind the sofa.

Is there really a hospital unit (or something) called Complicated Contraception? I really hope so...

Ouch. {hugs}

"Are you sure it's still there?" indeed. It's not really like it's going to have just carelessly fallen out while you're shopping, and be hiding in a corner of M&S somewhere is it?!
