So my first run of night shifts wasn't too bad. The shift back to normal time is giving me a bit of trouble, though. Wednesday morning I was wide awake at 3:00 after sleeping for 5 hours. This morning, I was wide awake at 4:00 after having slept 5 hours.

Insomnia has taught me the difference between waking up because I need to pee/oh gods, someone farted and I'm suffocating/why is there a cat on my head/shit, monsters under the bed! and waking up because this is when we wake up and no amount of whining is getting us back to sleep. Waking up at 4:00 was the latter with a flavour of why is there a cat on my head?. To be fair, this was because I had just opened my eyes and turned the light on, which in Loki-language totally means time for pettings!

So I get up and go to the bathroom, closely followed by Loki because pee breaks from pettings don't exist in his world. Having been thoroughly loved on, I get dressed and wander downstairs. I then spent the next 10 minutes juggling cats, kettle and instant coffee.

I sit down and am instantly catpiled. Loki wants to lie next to me and purr thunderously. Jazz wants to be in my face. This is a problem, because my coffee wants to be in my face too and I really need coffee at just gone past Christfuckit'searly-o'-clock. We eventually work out an equitable arrangement. Loki purrs and kneads. Jazz waits politely for me to take a sip of coffee and move the mug away from my face before re-attempting to either insert himself up my left nostril or headbutt me in the eye. He occasionally dribbles on my shirt.

I can hear the dawn chorus starting up outside. I have two purring cats. I'm warm, comfortable and content. I have a cool job, awesome friends both near and far, and a man I'm really quite fond of. I sigh happily and skritch Jazz on his head. Life doesn't get much bet...and then Loki bites Jazz's tail, Jazz smacks him on the head in return and then launches himself off my lap, growling and hissing. Loki bolts after him. In the process, one of them kicks me in the nipple and I smack myself in the teeth with my mug.

I've generally found that when moving waking hours in the need-to-avoid-waking-early direction, it can take my body nearly a day per hour to adjust.

That's a figure mostly arrived at through jetlag experience, which I could imagine working a bit differently, but still...
