So I'm watching cooking shows on 4OD and having a lot of fun. Currently watching Sophie's Meat Course and the first episode is about pork and how you can use every bit of the pig. And there's this farmer who breeds and cross-breeds heritage pigs and they're such awesome pigs. I want some now. But I can't have any, or so [livejournal.com profile] azekeil tells me. So currently the animals I can't have are donkeys, goats, sheep, chicken, ducks, geese, turkeys, miniature cows and alpacas. I can, however, have rabbits and ferrets. Okay then...

Though of course I can have these animals. Just not here. When(if?) we own a piece of land big enough and he doesn't have to help out, I can have animals. However, as you can see, my list of desired animals has increased and my smallholding is slowly turning into a petting zoo. And that's when it hit me: The Best Idea Ever!

The Edible Petting Zoo!

Teach local kids about organic farming and how you treat animals and here's how you collect chicken/duck/goose eggs*, this is what they eat and this little piggie will go to market and this little goat will be for the stew. They'd learn all about how to best pluck a chicken/duck/goose and how you can use the feathers afterwards. And as an extra special treat, show them how you can use ferrets to catch rabbits!

But the best thing would be at the exit, of course: Ye Olde Gift Shoppe. Here their parents can buy them really locally sourced sausages and such. For the kids, plush goats and pigs and cows with all the cuts marked and labelled! It'd be brilliant.

I've even come up with a slogan: The Edible Petting Zoo! Where Organic Farming meets Childhood Trauma!

* The latter likely involves the ability to run really fast.

You can't have rabbits AND ferrets, that's like having foxes and chickens!

Erm... next time you come up to see us, we'll take you to Northfield where you can pet piglets and eat delicious sausages.

Your evil, it pleases me.

Still, hunting rabbits with ferrets? I'm sure ferrets would have no problem catching the little fluffies, but once they have brought down the beasts, would they come happily bouncing back to you trailing the bloodied corpse?

Ferrets are quite intelligent. They may well reason: "Hmmm. I am down here in a dark, warm, dry hole with a large supply of delicious food. The Big Upright sent me here because she cannot go here herself. If she cannot catch the rabbits here, then she cannot catch me. I think I will stay down here a while. Big Upright can have the foot. It's lucky."

The devil, as always, is in the details.

Ferrets were bred for hunting rabbits and are still used that way today.

This is basically my life plan, you realize? Only with a less catchy slogan :)
